The Guidelines are the work of the International Diabetes Federation Task Force on Clinical Guidelines, which is focused on meeting the critical global need to provide up-to-date evidence-based information and training for healthcare professionals. This is especially important as, alarmingly, the latest data from the IDF Diabetes Atlas show that over 285 million people worldwide now live with diabetes. Within 20 years, IDF predicts the figure will jump to 435 million. Healthcare professionals must be equipped with the latest improvements and standards in diabetes care to tackle this spiralling epidemic. |

International Diabetes Federation says epidemic out of control
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) released new data today showing that a staggering 285 million people worldwide have diabetes. The latest figures from the IDF Diabetes Atlas indicate that people in low and middle-income countries (LMCs) are bearing the brunt of the epidemic, and that the disease is affecting far more people of working age than previously believed. |

Some women develop diabetes during pregnancy, but the condition
disappears once the baby is born. However, if this happens, there's a
greater chance of the mother developing diabetes in later life. If diabetes occurs during pregnancy, the mother often has no symptoms.
The condition is usually only detected during routine antenatal checks. |

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease results when
the body’s system for fighting infection (the immune system) turns against a
part of the body. In diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the
insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The pancreas then produces little
or no insulin. A person who has type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to
live.
